To promote globalization of university education, all classes, guidance, and student support are offered in English. Since we established the major in 2011, we have faced challenge after challenge in creating a place where students can study international relations for four years solely in English. We have since realized an educational environment where students feel like they are studying abroad even though they are in Japan, with our Japanese students working together in friendly rivalry with our many international students. Every year, we send excellent graduates out into the real world. The Global Studies Major in the College of International Relations celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2021. Today, the international community faces a variety of problems that need to be tackled beyond national boundaries, such as climate change, resource depletion, global wealth disparity, and immigration issues. The world requires human resources who can take a multifaceted approach to these issues that cannot be solved overnight. We encourage and foster individuals to proactively tackle challenges, acquire a global perspective and develop diverse values. The Global Studies Major will continue to rise to the challenge of cultivating students who can succeed in the global arena by equipping them with the broad insights and flexible thinking skills necessary to solve problems. In these sessions, our faculty members discussed the past 10 years of GS, including their memories and individual thoughts, as well as the future of the major. 02The character and appeal of the Global Studies Major In this round-table discussion, recently appointed GS faculty members and the Dean of the College talked about their impressions of GS at the time of their arrival, the actual educational environment, traditions that should be preserved, and upcoming initiatives.
