The university and corporations work together with the aim of training and supporting street-smart global engineers, which is the goal of the Engineering Department. Currently, it is specifically aimed at supporting the efforts of the Faculty of Engineering&＃39;s Capstone Project (also known as "SP"). This consortium aims to build a constantly evolving platform for industry-academia collaborative human resource development, as the university and the member companies work together to improve the operation of the SP, while also evaluating the actual learning gained from both a corporate and academic perspective. Whether or not you decide to provide an SP problem for next fiscal year, we hope that you will first join the consortium and use it as an opportunity to gather information and consider what problems to submit in the future. The Consortium will conduct the following activities for its members: Provide information on SP activities that relate to our stated purposes. Program of Events: Greetings from President Maeda Overview of the Consortium Presentation of a Letter of Appreciation to engineers who taught students in fiscal year 2022 2023 Schedule Panel Discussion Theme: Guiding Students During the Capstone Project 27 in-person participants, 41 online participants, and 68 total participants (34 companies, 1 individual) About the Capstone Project (SP) Overview The Faculty of Engineering at Kyoto University of Advanced Science and Technology, which was established in April 2020, aims to foster street-smart global engineers (those who combine the ability to learn from social issues and solve problems) who can be active worldwide. It aims to achieve this through cross-disciplinary learning that is not confined to traditional engineering fields such as mechanics, electricity, information, and chemistry as well as practical learning through problem-solving (PBL) and by providing global education taught in English alongside international students. The Faculty of Engineering&＃39;s signature PBL is the Capstone Project (SP) in which students work as a team to solve real problems that companies face in the field. SP is implemented at top engineering universities in Western countries, especially in the United States. At our university, it is mandatory for third- and fourth-year undergraduates, the first such initiative in Japan. All third-year students work on the Keystone Project*1 and fourth-year students who will pursue employment after graduation work on the Capstone Project (together known as the “SP”). *Known as the "Pre-Capstone Project" in the 2023 academic year. Students integrate the knowledge and skills acquired through lectures, exercises, experiments, and practical training, and work in teams of four to solve a problem presented by a company. If the student team lacks the knowledge or skills to solve the problem, they have to find the strength to solve it on their own. Through the problem-solving process, the student team comes to understand what kind of mission the company has as well as what is expected of engineers in the field. The students can develop their communication and teamwork skills as well as their resourcefulness. To Companies As mentors, corporate engineers should regularly advise student teams in collaboration with faculty. Please give firm guidance on the student&＃39;s work ethic. Also, please advise student teams working on other companies’ problems during presentations, which are held three times a year. We believe that it is important for students to go through a process of trial and error, thinking and worrying about a problem. We would greatly appreciate it if you could support their growth. With nearly 400 students taking SP as a mandatory course, our SP is truly a unique initiative worldwide. It requires a lot of trial and error when it comes to setting the difficulty level of the problems, deciding the way to advise the teams, or deciding how to evaluate the project results. We ask company engineers to meet with students once a week for about 30 minutes to an hour, in-person or remotely, to give advice. Each team has a faculty member as an advisor. The faculty member also participates in meetings. There is no cost to the company. The university will pay up to 400,000 yen (for a team of 4) for one assignment. When proposing a problem, companies are requested to submit the Agreement Concerning Operation of the Capstone Project. All intellectual property generated belongs to the company.
