Five categories introduced by Autor, i.e., non-routine cognitive; interpersonal, non-routine cognitive; analytical, non-routine manual physical; routine manual; and routine cognitive, have been widely used among researchers and are very important when research is conducted especially for employment and wage polarizations. In order to categorize occupations, skill requirement variables are used. Although variables in “Dictionary of Occupational Titles” used by Autor are most popular, original 1977 skill requirement variables might not represent current occupations in this emerging artificial intelligence (AI) era. Not only Autor’s but virtually all previous works assign skill requirement variables manually to five of each category. Accordingly assigning many variables to each category is practically difficult. We propose hierarchical clustering technique to categorize occupations into five categories. 253 skill requirement variables in O*Net are used. I found occupations such as taxi drivers classified into routine manual rather than non-routine manual once classified.
