Since 15 in Japan aiming for the best! 2024-02-19 Peicen Zhao From Quingdao China, Currently working in Tokyo, Japan Position: Technical project manager at Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy Most recent achievement at Tohoku University: Master’s degrees at Tohoku University’s Department of Civil Engineering and Architecture Introduction I’m Peicen Zhao, originally from Qingdao, China, and I’m currently living and working in Tokyo, Japan. I came to Japan by myself at the age of 15 with the goal of getting into a university ranked among the world’s top 100. Unusually for an international student, I took the Japanese National Center Test for University Admissions and then the Tohoku University General Selection Entrance Exam alongside Japanese students. As a result, I successfully enrolled as an undergraduate student at Tohoku University’s Department of Civil Engineering and Architecture. What did you learn and what was your research field during your study at Tohoku University? I completed both my bachelor’s and master’s degrees at Tohoku University’s Department of Civil Engineering and Architecture. The first three years of undergraduate study were all about the basics (mathematics, physics, etc.), and everyone in the department took the same classes. The last year of undergraduate study was when we had to pick a research topic and a professor as a mentor. Initially, I wanted to become an architect who designs the interior and exterior of buildings, etc. However, the year I enrolled in Tohoku University was the year of the unforgettable 3.11 Great East Japan Earthquake. Volunteering at an affected area led me to witness how people suffered from the great earthquake and tsunami with my own eyes. It made me realize that the resilience and functionality of structures can save lives! For that reason, I chose earthquake engineering as my research topic and continued that for my graduate study as well. Reference : https://www.aij.or.jp/paper/detail.html?productId=370388 Peicen standing at the entrance of material innovation center Did you have any difficulties when you were doing your research and study at Tohoku University? How did you overcome them? The toughest time was after I returned from the University of California, Davis as I finished my one-year exchange program during my second year of graduate school. Since the systems were different at the two schools, I only had six months to finish my remaining credits and thesis in order to graduate on time. I didn’t want to extend my studies for another school year, so it was probably the most intense six months of my life, as I had to go to classes to earn extra credits, finish my thesis, and search for jobs at the same time - with no breaks whatsoever. Did you manage to keep in contact with your supervisor, lab mates and friends? My supervisor retired the year after I graduated. I went back to Sendai for his retirement ceremony. I kept in touch with some of the good people that I met at Tohoku University mostly through social media. A photo of Peicen with her professor, Prof. Masato Motosaka, at the undergraduate graduation ceremony Tell us some of your unforgettable memories and experiences in Sendai. My first unforgettable experience in Sendai is what I mentioned previously: the 3.11 earthquake. I was not in Sendai when it happened, however I was somewhat affected by it. Usually an entrance ceremony would’ve been held for freshmen, but due to the earthquake, the ceremony was canceled. Also, the school year started in May instead of April that year. Furthermore, the main building where we were supposed to study at was severely damaged during the earthquake, so we had to go to multiple campuses for lectures for four years until it was rebuilt. The second experience would be the building I designed and supervised in the new extension to the Aobayama Campus. After I graduated from Tohoku University, I became a structural engineer at Kumagai Gumi Co., Ltd.. I was very honored to have the opportunity to be the structural engineer for the Material Innovation Center on the Aobayama Campus. This experience definitely deepened my bond with Tohoku University even more and gave me opportunities to travel back to Sendai to reminisce about my student days. After working at Kumagai Gumi Co., Ltd. as a structural engineer for approximately five years and obtaining First-class Registered Architect certification (Ikkyu Kenchikushi), I decided to pursue a different career in renewable energy to make a more positive contribution to a greener and more sustainable future. Currently, I am working as a technical project manager at Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy, where I coordinate projects related to wind power generators and onshore wind power generation technologies. I also work in collaborating with global teams to provide technical support to customers and projects for structural design-related issues before and after orders are made for wind power generation equipment in the Japanese market, and I also supervise the time management of turbine design and certification process. A photo of Peicen at her previous workplace, standing on top of a building she designed A photo of Peicen at her current company, standing in front of wind turbine blades Do you have any message to your juniors at Tohoku University? Believe in yourself. Believe in your potential. Believe that if there’s a will, there’s a way. Don’t ever let others tell you what you can or cannot do. One of her favourite Shots. Alumni Stories ▲ 東北大学　海外同窓生 [ ヘルプ | Copyright ] ログイン 新規登録 mb pusher-->
