Established in 1949, it is designed based on the Doshisha emblem, which represents the ideal of Doshisha's education, which aims for the trinity of the harmony of wisdom, virtue, and body. Doshisha Emblem This emblem, which is made up of three equilateral triangles, is a design of the Assyrian character "mutsuu," which means country or soil. It was designed by Hangetsu Yuasa, a poet (known for his work “Juuni no Ishizuka”) from Doshisha University, and scholar of the ancient Orient. Hangetsu was a professor of theology at Doshisha at the time of its creation. Since its establishment, it has been interpreted as representing the ideal of Doshisha's education, which aims for the trinity of harmony of wisdom, virtue, and body. Adopted in October 1893 Designed by Kichiro Yuasa (Hangetsu) School Colors The school color consists of two colors, purple and white. The royal purple corresponds to the neutral color between the ancient Japanese purple, and the purple from the Edo Period. It is the same color of Amherst College in the U.S., which is where our founder Joseph Hardy Neesima studied. The school flag’s base color is purple, with the emblem stitched in white. Crest This crest, created by an alumni, combines the words of Jesus, the D.W.C.L.A emblem, the founding year, the campus building (Eiko-kan), grapes, and a grapevine. Created in 1999. EGO SUM VITIS VERA 「"I am the true vine" (New Testament, John 15:1) TheseI are the words of Jesus on the day before his death. As we are connected to our university with Christianity as our founding philosophy, these words clearly show that we are connected to Jesus Christ and God through our alma mater. In addition, VITIS VERA can be translated as "the vine of truth". These words also give us the confidence that all graduates are united in one place anywhere in the world by the Bible-based scholarly truths they have learned at their alma mater.
